I was out fishing the other day with a friend and he caught a fish i have never seen before, i thought it was a rock greenling, but i believe it is too red. Almost immediately after he caught a male kelp greenling, i believe. We were over hard bottom, i was reeling in gophers. The water was about 52°F and i dunno if i have ever seen such a colorful fish come out of where i live except the vermilions. The inside of it's mouth was purple, and the colors were more vibrant in real life.

Any ideas? Some sort of sculpin? Or super colorful greenling?

Wow thanks for the fast response! Am i right about the kelp greenling? Both beautiful fish.

Hehe look in the back ground it gives it all away! Someone will be able to guess, ill give u a hint its off the central coast of California. The fish didn't have any of the frilly stuff around its mouth, it was very 'smooth'. Do those live in cali?

im not from cali so i have no idea where its from, and google images some fish and find it man.

right outside of Morro Bay doubt u have heard of the place, only 10k ppl in the town, off the 10E Buoy for the locals (now renamed to 18EB but no one calls it that), anyone else with ID confirmation? google images has nothing under red sculpin that looks like it... but if they vary in color maybe.
