Again, the only one way to know for sure that it's an alligator gar would be checking the mouth and see if it has two rows of teeth. For your record, all gar species are not native to Arizona so the location is moot point. Sorry guys, you can argue all you wants but it cannot be 100% certainty that it is an alligator gar unless you check the mouth.

here's what I think: it can't be a Florida gar unless it is a gar that got throw out from a fish keeper. Spotted(and FLG) doesn't have that kind of snout. The pattern look a lot like alligator gar or long nose. And that thick boddy, annal fin, mid belly fin and tail say it is most likely an alligator gar than anything else(unless you can say that he hook a tropical out of AZ's water).
I don't go with thick body, all gar species have thick body (suggested that they are eating very well) anal fin, mid belly fin and tail which all gar species have....I try not go with the spot patterns which can be regional variant for all said species and even in individuals in same waters.

so it most likely a throw away Florida gar. And there is pretty much no way to check it since it is caught and picture taken a few years ago.

Yup your guess is good as my guess. But it's definitely an aquarium fish that got released by an individual, most likely avoid being caught by a game warden since all gar species are illegal in Arizona.

Does not look gator to me either.

Really? Thanks. Good to know.
