Ruby reds are line breed, not hybrid. Now if this is a hybrid that is fine, but be sure that when you sell you label as hybrid peacock. Already a lot of "named fish" hybrids out there that the hobby has to let people know are hybrids. Would like some better pictures for ID if you could. It is not a red emp.

My vote goes for a Red shoulder Hybrid....maybe a cross of Red Shoulder and a Rubescens? Awesome looking fish though...

Mike, please explain the difference in your words between line bred and hybrids.
Also I am working on better pics. May hafta enlist the gf, it's her camera I am trying to use and I am not doing so well!
Lots of red on this fish including the fins, but the back half of the body is 50/50 red and blue mixed

Line bred simply means that the best looking fish were continously bred to get the best traits to pass down. The German Red is an example of this.
Hybrids is when you have 2 different species breed....for example a Red shoulder male breeds with a Ruby Red female. The resulting fry are hybrids of the 2!

So what were Ruby reds line bred from originally? Maleris? See, my point is that the German red is not a naturally occurring species (please note that Lake Malawi is not found anywhere near Germany!) Eureka red jakes were line bred I take it. Ruby reds, German reds etc. What was the starting point for these line bred "species"?
