Hi........

Tropheus is right!!!

striata and stewartii never show the red stripe under the eye!

This is a jvenile gachua!

Cheers
Pascal

I agree with Danny, this is a juvenile channa stewartii, golden snakehead.
I compared your pic with my Aqualog Fish ID book. This scientific book has reference photos of snakeheads as adults, sub-adults, and juveniles. Your picture matched up spot on. When you guys try to ID snakeheads, what references are you guys using? I hate to disagree with Tropheus and Pallestopheles but I believe they are wrong. Check this book out. It's a must have, read for true snakehead lovers! Aqualog "All Labyrinths" is what its called.

Hi.....

I Know the author of the aqualaog book....(Frank Schäfer).......he is a friend of mine!
And he told me ,that he has done some mistakes in the past, because the knowledge was not on the same level as it is today!

So forget about the Aqualog book!
It is a good book.......but not in this time we live in now!

Until now we are still learning something new.........an there were a lot of more imports with snakeheads comming to Europe ..as it was in the past!

And books can not top expierience!!!

I have bred a lot of snakehead species....and I promise you:
This is defintily gachua!

Also I have bred stewartii in different generations.......and I have caught Ch. striata in Thailand.......

The look completly different!

Cheers....

By the way........

The one in the Aqualaog book, that you have called Channa stewartii........

It is not stewartii.........

That was one of the misidentifications!

The one that is shown in the " All Labyrinth"-Book is now disrcibed as Channa aurantimaculata!
(I do not have the book at hand at the moment......but I think to remember that mistake!)

You also can see this misidentification in Jörg Vierkes "Rauberbande im Aquarium" Book........
The Title picture is called Channa stewartii ,too...........
But it is Channa aurantimaculata indeed!

Cheers again!

lol , that is the problem with books , there great and give the information that is right at that time , unfortunatly as things progress and new things are learned you cant go back and alter the book , this is more so with snakeheads ,the species has been pretty neglected by science compaired to most species, (hence so many undescribed species) , in the last few years things have moved on miles and people know a lot more now than they did then , however there is still many new things to learn and many 1st,s still to come in the channa hobby and its a great time to get involved

cheers col
