I believe there are multiple plecos that are called or sold as commons

Yeah it sure isnt a common.

Actually he is the real common that was replaced by the others commons that came later into the market. The scientific name is hypostomus plecostomus(as mentioned) which is the only 'pleco' to use plecostomus in it's name.

The one you are thinking of is a Pterygoplichthys pardalis .

awesome h. plecostomus. its funny that many of the "common" pleco species are becoming more rare than a lot of the fancy plecos.
