Obviously this would appear to be a pumpkinseed...But, I'm starting to wonder if it has something else in its blood line becuase it has the gorgeous coloration of a male, but it doesnt have the typical pumpkinseed "red spot" on its gill ear. Every pumpkingseed ive ever caught has had that red spot but as you can see this guy has no red spot to be found on the edge of its gill, or "ear" as many call it...whats up with this? is it still a male p.seed?0901120126.jpg

face looks like a pumpkinseed but the rest does look weird, it kinda looks like a bluegill almost or green sunfish with the colouring. is it that dark or does that have to do with the colouring of the light????

It sort of looks like it has a bluegill pattern in there. Its dark but you can kinda see the vertical bars that I dont typically see in pumpkinseeds

Sometimes redear and pumpkinseeds lost their red spot when get older. Your pumpkinseed appeared to be just a regular pumpkinseed.

thanks for the replies..let me add a few things i should have earlier, the camera i was using has more setting and buttons than in an airplane's cockpit so for some reason it was kinda fuzzy and too dark and i couldnt figure out hos to make it normal without messing it all up. So, the fish is not this dark and has typical pumpkinseed color. Also, the faint dark vertical bars seemed only present while i was trying to take a picture, because it seemed that the camera made the fish very uncomfortable and confused for some reason...when i held the camera up he slowed down and turned a tad darker and then made very quick spiratic movements if i'd move the camera at all...same thing happens with my cichlids...they just dont like cameras lol. After i was finished taking pics he went back to normal.

also, just a quick question, with a healthy p.seed of this size (6"), who lives in a 75 gallon tank and eats well and healthy, how many more years can I roughly expect this guy to live? I really like him he's one of my favorite sunfish!
