ID this Vieja for me!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just thought I'd toss a couple of updated pictures on here of the same fish 5 months after the last one. It's around 10" now. I'm still open to hearing what you guys think it is. Sorry for the crappy pictures, the camera I used wasn't very good and washed the colors out.

It reminds me of a Bifa (look at the head spots!!!) and Zonatus (Look at the darks around eyes!!!) . Had/have both and looks like both. A BIFA-ZO IMO

AND THE DEBATE CONTINUES! For a few months it looked 100% Bifa, and now it's changing colouration again. I love this fish regardless of what it is. Extremely thick and fast growing. I also have a sibling of this fish as well (which I bought about 5-6 months after this one, much smaller). It has more red in the throat area than this one posted. I'll try to snap a pic of it tomorrow if I remember. Perhaps the sibling will offer some more clues as to what they may be.

I'm new to Viejas, but it looks like a hybrid to me also. With that red head, I'm thinking bifa, or hartwegi with a zo. If you want some good pics of an adult Coatzacoalcos, check out Rapps site. He has some fry for sale and is showing off an adult fish.

BTW, I really like it too. If it is a hybrid, it looks like it took the best characteristics from each type of fish - blue coloration with a red head.

Thanks. I like the way it looks too. The picture really doesn't capture the colour very well at all though. I'll try again tonight if I feel up to it when I get home from work. I never thought it looked much like a Zonatus until very recently. It recently moved up the hierarchy in my tank (I actually think it's the boss now), and much of the purple colors turned blue as well as a fair bit more black, especially around the eyes.

I took a video tonight that offers a little better color than before. The sibling to the fish is also included in the video around 40 seconds in.
