I'm looking at buying this little fella and I'm not able to tell if it's a common or something else based on the pic. Any ideas? It's ~ 8" long.

I'm assuming wolf fish do pretty good during shipping. It's only coming from one state away and since the can breathe some air as well I figure he will be ok. Is there anything I need to know to tell this guy when he ships it to me.. aside from double bagging it :D

... remove everyone else from your tank ... or the wolf will do it for you :grinyes:

Well I'm not too sure about the guy selling this thing, I'm having a hard time reaching him to complete the sale much less if something happens after the sale. So I might end up grabbing one from Shark Aquarium..

Now my question is, there are a lot of different variants listed. I know the difference between species but what about the difference between the location it was collected I guess? Are any more aggressive then others?

From the pic above it looks like it could be a "prognatus"/pantanal, with the depression on the top of the head and "v" shaped stripes. Could be an Ecuador also, it's not the best pic for IDing.
Answer to your question about locality variants: Yes, I have several mala variants: "regular" mala from Peru, "prognatus" from Argentina, Vennezuela mala, and I HAD a smaller "brazil" mala (not really sure though). I say HAD because although the "brazil" could hang with the Peru and "prognatus," but once the Venny was added all hell broke loose. The Brazil was the only casualty though, and the rest live together, but they still have their scraps. Each has it's own attitude/behavior: the "prognatus" is very active and more mid/top water, hits the surface of the water hard and handfeeds; the Venny is almost scared to hit the surface, but is incredibly aggressive on the bottom when feeding. I've also kept a very large Ecuador "blue" mala before as well.

Local name of 1 of 3 different variants found in an area of Argentina, George Fear from Shark Aquarium posted it a while ago.
