I was under the impression that they were technically venomous, but not dangerous, similar to garter snakes, hognose, mangrove snakes, tentacled snakes...?

I believe you are right. I however, don't know for 100%.

Any Herp MFK People want to help in this: Is a Florida Ribbon Snake Venomous? Or somewhat?
 
We were at our timeshare in Orlando Fl, catchin lizards and dodgin snakes, when my son found this cool turtle, any info appreciated, also i always worry about snakes there, are there poisonous snakes in Orlando area?
Almost looks like a desert tortoise. :confused: Not in florida though.
 
nope ribbon snakes anre harmless and yup thats a gopher tortise. get pretty big
 
Its a gopher tort and the laws are reasonably strict. I never saw any when i was down there however i did see red bellies, softshells, cooters and one snapper.

Nice looking tort but too many are eaten and or killed by habitat destruction and road mortality is also a rather large threat to them.
