my brain just hatched an idea that i think needs to be subjected to scrutiny from people here at MFK (i want to hear your opinions). i think i could make a giant canister filter with the basic design of a sump but just cover it with a piece of glass and have a silicone ring that you put along the edge of the lid. then you silicone some little hooks on the side of the tank u use and get some more hooks screwed in and sealed in the glass so when you hook them to the other hooks it closes the silicone for a hopefully water tight seal. ill post a drawing later but its kinda like those jars with the rubber that seals when the metal hook closes over the other hook. if you know what i mean. tell me what you think or dont get and ill try to explain it.

heres the lid:

the rest of it:

any questions about the design or how it works im up for suggestions or anything else. id like to try this so to make it work im open to ideas. :)

Hmmmm....... Why not just use a 55 gallon drum with a removable lid?

Why not just a regular sump why seal it. Am i missing something.

so that theres no chance of overflow if the power goes out and it gives you more space for media. just basically so you cant overflow it and nothing evaporates in it so your water level doesnt drop as quickly.

Sounds interesting silicone seal however would only be a on time seal. You would have to apply a new seal every time you open the filter. I believe you would need a rubber gasket to fit just like a regular can imo. Give it a try though .

I would go with gasket and clamps before actually siliconing the top in place. I'm not completely understanding your "divider for cleaning" but I don't think it would hold up under pressure very well. Silicone some stop plates where you want to top to rest, and make a clamp that will hold the top on

Edit: You can buy sheets of gasket material from autosupply store for cheap.

With a properly set up w/d, the amount of water which will spill in from the tank during a power outage should be less than what the w/d can hold. So there is no chance of a w/d overflowing.

If you want to look into building your own DIY canister filter, look at this thread.

Next, canister filters work buy purging all air from the system, your "canister" filter will be air locked.
