I was gonna do this with a 55 gallon barrel with a swimming pool water pump, Wait a minute...what do you mean by a GIANT? 20g, 50g, 100g...?

giant as in bigger than normal which for me is a 20g.

and most people think im siliconing the top shut but im siliconing it letting it dry and cure so then when i put the hooks on it works kinda like a gasket but just easier to use... kinda. id have to make it up as i go along a bit... but i think i could make it work. i also like the idea of using a gasket cuz thats easier than trying to make my own.

I wasn't willing to put a sump on my tank without it being drilled either. So I flirted with building my own canister filter. I had a hard time finding a container that I could trust so I decided to build a closed loop system instead. Here's the thread:

yeah i might just make my own canister using large PVC pipes and just have an extra big pump for more turnover but i just kinda like the idea of building it myself :)

don't go with a PVC enclosure if you want a high turn over rate. Problem with this is the velocity of flow will be too high within the PVC not allowing the bacteria to do its job very efficiently. It will take a LONG time for your tank to cycle.

Did you take a look at my thread? Trust me, I have thought of the direction you want to go, I have had about 6 other designs and after some theory testing, they would all fail. Except the last design which theory testing says it will work, actual testing is still up in the air at the moment.

It won't last. It may for a while but its not going to. You would need a clamp with a large foot print to be siliconed to the side of the glass just so it has enough strength to hold a clamped clover.
