idea for my 75 gallon when it's a reef

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
cool.. and if you feel the tang would be a strech just don't get it.. no ones going to say anything about a fish you DIDN'T get.. :)

as long as people don't say they should be in a like a 30-55 im happy :D

tank sounds like an interesting one lol. I dont see to many lionfish with corals. Certainly a tank id love to see pics of. Maroon clowns and lions actually make very good tank mates, as each grow at a rather decent rate. Now with that said, id still follow your original idea and grow the clowns as mush as possible first and then add to the tank, preferebly before the lionfish.

Tangs: now i owned one in a 3 foot long tank for about 7 months and yes he was active but he also grew and out grew the dimension of the tank, not the volume itself. A 75 is usually the minimum recommended lenght for some of the smaller tang species. Now if you had intent on keeping unicorn tang, achilles tang, etc then you may want a larger tank, just for that added space for them. Just my thoughts on the subject. The tank in my experience will grow as long as provided a healthy diet of greens and some meat and a decent amount of space.

well I know I am getting the clowns and I already have the lion. the tang is the one I really like the look of, but I know they can get very large and would require a bigger tank. I am looking for a bigger tank for when I get my own house, but It won't be for another 6month prolly. and if we find a house sooner the 75g reef is gonna be on hold for a while.

what is a small tang really? I like the yellow ones and the bluish one, but I don't know what the bluish ones are called. are they too big for the 75 when they get big? I don't want any high end huge one by any means. I also would substitute for a larger wrasse or angel.

tomini
blue eye bristle tooth
kole
IMO- zebrasoma tangs other than, say, sailfins
and certain acanthurus tangs, although many do get large (clown, sohal, etc)

yeah the yellow Hawaiian is very common in 75 gallons. same with purple tangs, like the one bigG has, same fish different color lol.

stay away from tangs ranging from 9 inches or larger, just a bit to much for a 4 foot tank.

Tominin is the smallest tang and would be my recommendation, or the kole tang. I've seen yellow and purple tangs the size of dinner plates (yes, seriously) so a 75 is really cutting it close. You can get them small enough, and if you are planning to upgrade in 6 months you'd be fine, but if you keep the 75 just be prepared to give the tang away when it outgrows the tank.

And and clown tang or sohal tang would be miserable in a 75. They are very active swimmers like the Achilles, powder blue tangs and other acanthurus tangs. I would not put them in a 75.

that's why i listed them as an exception ;)

well i am taking the lion out of the equation by setting it up its own 40breeder tank. the 75 is going to be a mixed reef now. i was thinking the maroon clowns, a tang and if there

if there?

was that the end of the thought?
lol :)
