Let me start that I probably won't be getting said fish for a while, if at all.
When I started to think about how I like some aspects about my catfish and some things about my bettas, and how they both have negatives I don't like so much.
I got to thinking, what is my ideal aquarium fish?. Does such a fish exist?.
Possibly a catfish and betta like fish rolled up in one?.
If such a fish does not exist, I wonder which fish comes in closest.
Here are a list of traits my ideal aquarium fish would have:
- Would require a 250 gal tank max size to thrive as an adult.
- Size would be open besides being able to thrive in above tank size or smaller.
- Would be vigorous and able to thrive in normal aquarium conditions.
- Would thrive in hard alkaline water.
- Would thrive without special needs and special care.
- Would have a lifespan of at least 10 yrs.
- Would be interactive and responsive towards people.
- Will at least swim towards the lid for food.
- Would be adorned with some colors.
- Omnivore or herbivore fish preferred.
- Would be captive bred.
-Would be available as a rescue pick up if not captive bred.
What the ideal fish would not be:
- Extremely predatory with a big gaping mouth, the kind of that is found to have swallowed tank-mates on a regular basis.
- Endangered in the wild and wild caught for the aquarium trade.
- A weakling that dies at the drop of a hat without specialized care.
- Dies during the first vacation the fish keeper takes.
- Hiding excessively.
- Dull brown colored.
- Completely ignoring the fish- keeper.
- Require a small pond as an adult in order to thrive.
- If on the larger side, viciously biting or otherwise harming fish keeper making tank cleaning more difficult.
- Be a cichlid ( long story, some may know why).
