I would say Fahaka puffer, but they're highly predatory. What about some ornate bichirs?

why not a cichlid? Seems to fit the list(other than the not be a cichlid part)

Go with goldfish, Eupterus. You won't regret you chose them. As for them being responsive, they respond quickly if they hear you coming with a tray of food.
