Hi Guys,

I have a 4ft x 2ft x2ft tank in the making. Its for my 3" Oscar who's currently in a 50g bare bottom tank. I know he'll be at least 10" within a year's time. My oscars always outgrow my 50g really fast and I end up having to give them away :(
Well I've had enough of that and have decided to go bigger.

I'd like to put one more SA Cichlid in the tank. I have kept a Jaguar, GT, Red Devil, Severum over the years but never together due to space constraint, and I always ended having to give them away as well.

I am leaning towards a GT.

I have read about and seen tanks with all of the above, but I'd like hear your opinions before I decide. I still have some time before the tank is set.

Why not give salvini a try they have amazing colours , easy breeders , don't get to big a pair would be fine in 4x2x2 IMO

Well from my experience I've always had problems trying to get only 2 cichlids to live together in one tank in peace, they only have each other to focus on and that can be bad at times....I'd prefer to get a community, or just keep one solo! But in your case since you already have your Oscar, I think if you wanted to get a tank mate for him it should be a smaller cichlid that won't pose to much of a threat to him; if you go for larger cichlids that tend to be more aggressive like a red devil or jaguar the results are almost surely to be bad! So I think maybe a gt or jd would work!

Salvini are very aggressive so your Oscar may struggle if they start to battle , jd's or gt's would be better , I've kept convicts and kribensis with Oscars in the past but the Oscars have always been bigger and theres been plenty of hides for the smaller cichlids to defend , you could add some dither fish like tiger barbs to keep the aggression attention down between the cichlids

Convicts are cool little fish , give them a little hide to defend and they'll breed like fun (only prob is they are aggressive especially when breeding ) so I'd wait for your Oscar to put some size on first or get tiny cons ;):D

Well I have a 30G gathering dust at the moment which I use to fatten up livebreeders. If convicts / salvinis get too rowdy, I can always put them "in detention".
