So I'm still waiting for my 90 gallon to come in which will be a Rift Lake Cichlid tank per request of the wife. In the meantime I grabbed a 40 gallon breeder and would like to breed some smaller SA or CA Cichlid. Water pH is 7.6 and generally hard water. Water coming from the water plant is 140-220 ppm hardness. Tank is filtered by an Aquaclear 110 and lighting is a Hygger planted 24/7. I was looking through some older posts but wanted to see what suggestions others had. May also try out some easier/hardier plants.

Blue acara? I don't know much about cichlids though, so take that for what you will.

Well I’d normally say red wolf for any 40b…but you are going for cichlids
Best bet is eba like suggested or any of the amantitlania species + relatives. Rainbow cichlids are very beautiful.
Dwarf pike can work.

Unless you want to buy a RODI system I would stay away from South American cichlids I could only breed Central American cichlids. Alternatively you could dilute the tap water with rainwater or tanin water although I doubt the tannins would lower the ph any. That would be a perfect tank for a pair of convicts or even a Jack Dempsey pair if you stay on top of water changes
