I have an extra 40g laying around and I’m looking for ideas. Thinking of a smallish single predator/oddball. Something with a little bit of size to it and big attitude/interesting behavior but can still live in the 40. I’ve done reefs/FOWLR and African cichlids of all types
I currently have the following fish
Fahaka
Red eye red tail puffer
Tbar cichlid
Texas cichlid
Columbian tetras
Keyhole cichlid
Kribs
Burmese zebra eel
Warmouth
African leaf fish
Senegal n Delhezi bichirs
Belly crawler pike
Dwarf giraffe catfish
Obviously in different tanks lol
So basically something you don’t see every day that’s cool as h***
Thanks

You have two puffers already but how about a tetradon miurus?(I may have spelled it incorectly)

They are a bit hit and miss character wise, some are very outgoing while others will stay buried 90% or more of the time...

Maybe a schoutedeni puffer if you want to get another puffer that is???

Otherwise what about a mix of some rare stiphodon gobies??? They got lots of color and can be quite interesting, although lack the big attitude you were looking for...

Stiphodons are very cool, they remind me of the lawnmower blennys I had in my reef tank. I’m just looking for something a little bigger

Not sure how you feel about bettas, but what about a pair of Spotfin Bettas (Betta Macrostoma), larger than regular bettas, not quite as common and should pack some attitude and be fun to watch??? Although maybe still on the small side for a 40G....

Some of the dwarf cichlids that live in shells? I can't remember the name, sorry.
