Some of the dwarf cichlids that live in shells? I can't remember the name, sorry.

Shell dwellers are cool, but I’ve kept them and I’m looking for something I haven’t kept. It’s gett harder after 30 years keeping fish lol

Since you didn't specify fresh or salt how about a peacock mantis?

Not sure how you feel about bettas, but what about a pair of Spotfin Bettas (Betta Macrostoma), larger than regular bettas, not quite as common and should pack some attitude and be fun to watch??? Although maybe still on the small side for a 40G....

Gulpers are awesome but I think they get too big for a 40

I agree that Betta Macrostoma would be a cool option. Another could be blue gularis killis (Fundulopanchax sjoestedti).

Those killis look nice, I’ve been trying to track down a pike killi without luck

I believe there is a national killifish association, you could look there. You can also put up a wtb thread here for one.
