i have african cichlids in mine, lots of color variety. If you want to go for a community tank, i like the barbs idea. Ive always a big school of tiger babrbs and gold barbs and such. Rainbows are nice to for planted. Planted angelfish? a bit over done but u can still make it very pretty.
Of the many set-ups I've had, my all time favorites (not so much in terms of "cool fish" but in terms of an awesome, aesthetically-pleasing aquascaping) were my African cichlid tank with some synodontis cats, a tank full of silver dollars and clown loaches, and a planted tank with 100 cardinal tetras and cory cats.
I've done "cool monster fish" before, too, like arowanas, gars, knives, big cafish, etc., but they were so limiting in terms of tank mates and aquascaping, that eventually, it ended up being a big tank with no ornaments (cuz the fish slammed into them and hurt themselves) and just fish. And while they were all really neat fish that I enjoyed the behaviors of, the overall picture of the tank was pretty ugly...
cichlids seem to be the best option so far, i already have barbd and guaramis etc in another tank with some frogs, 2 full size oscars in the 75, the africans seem to be a cool color combination, and its a decent size tank for a nice amount of fish
yeah you be great with like some yellow labs, acei, kenyi, auratus, bumblebee, red zebra, and maybe even a trophii something..... and lots of hiding places lolz
If you do brightly colored cichlids, keep the tank simple. Dark or natural colored substrate with slate/rocks for hiding places. The darker their surrounding, the more the colors of the fish will "pop" out of the tank. I always hated when people had like fluorescent colored gravel and bright ornaments with them... It was like, "where are the fish?" cuz they blend in too well with so many colors clashing in the tank...
