Yea alligator gars are awesome, but they can reach more than 10 feet. I had to give my 2 36" gator gar to cabelas because they were too big for my 700

I would definitely suggest a dovii, as many have so far. He would be quite content in a 125 for many years.
However, if you were willing to spend the money and part with it/get a bigger tank eventually... a mbu or fahaka puffer are interesting alternatives. They are also expensive to feed, but extremely rewarding. Their faces are surreal, almost cartoonish.
