Ideas for more bio-filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
LOL. Anyways, I'll take out the carbon next time I clean it. I wondering if you had an opinion of using marineland's bio-balls or bio-rings in any of the trays?? I heard that because canisters get very little oxygen, bio-balls are useless in a canister.

I agree.... I just wanted to bring up the fact about the mechanical filtration not being necessary to see who would want to argue lol.

As always, you gave great advice...I agree with everything you said :)

I honestly couldn't tell you the exact surface area of ceramic rings vs bio balls other than the rings have more surface area. Since ceramic rings have a higher surface area, they are better suited for canisters/HOB filters. The bio balls are great where there is a larger area to use more balls i.e a sump. There is actually a whole sticky up at the top of the page that covers the pros/cons of filter media.

Alright. I will take out the carbon and put in more cermaic rings or eheim gravel. And I appreciate all the help. Thanks

Speaking of filtration, help me think thru this situation. Let's say you have a large planted tank with x # fish. You have filtration that keeps the tank in good parameters. If you then doubled the bio filtration could you double the fish? How far could you take this?

You have to consider area as well. Especially if a lot of your tank is taken up by plants. I am slightly overstocked on two of my tanks, maybe 10% more than I should be. But, I have 3 times the filtration needed for the tank size, plus I am pretty steady with my water changes. Even being just 10% overstocked and with all that extra filtration, I still worry about my fish!
