GT.....but if you dont want cichilds why don't you try Ctenopoma they are sweet and IMO a trio would be good in a 55 If I get rid of my current stock in my 55 I would put ctenopoma in there.
But its your tank and well cichilds are pretty cool too none the less
Now in some LFS I have seen electric blues with rams but they are all the same size and the tank had a lot of cover. I wouldn't hate getting an electric blue. Since seeing them I have wanted to try one.
In looking at the grammodes, i saw they still get about 12". Is that not typical? They are cool looking! But if they can get 12" I guess I would see that being the same problem as putting a flowerhorn or devil in a 55. Seems like it'd be cramped.
But the Ctenopoma.... Unique looking but I don't even know if I could get a hold of those around here short of shipping and I can't say they wow me that much. Thanks though.
It would take a LONG time for a grammodes to reach 12" if ever. That said it would be solo in a 55, but that wouldn't be a problem. A friend of mine restocked his 55(I had a lot of input in the stocking), and we went with some smaller growing CA's, school of giant danios, BN pleco, and some cory cats. It looks awesome and there is still room for another cichlid. We are trying to stick with females, though we are unsure about the gender of the septemfasciatus. Other than that there are 1 female convict and 1 female hrp. Looking for a multispinosum and/or a flyer still. There's a lot of flexibility and choices in stocking with a setup like that.

flowerhorns and red devils get over 12 inches which is why a 55 is not suitable for them, and like said before, it is very rare for a grammode to even get up to 12 inches
Kissing gourami get about 8" and are very interesting, could combine that with a pair of Salvini's or just have a smaller cichlid comunity?
1 female con
1 salvini
1-2 firemouths
that kind of thing? ive had tanks like this before they are full of life and colour, have some loach and or a pleco too, i suggest honeycomb cause they stay smaller and have nice patterns
oh and chrisplosion i saw red belly piranha' at london aquarium and they were the size of dinner plates so i would stay away from them, large + need a shoal juvies are okay in a 55, without upgrading thats just cruel
