Hi everyone ! I'm going to buy a 280 gallons tank soon ( 78x32x32 inch ) and i'm not decided on it's stocking.I have few ideas and i'm waiting for other ones. My ideas are next
- a jaguar cichlid pair,a festae pair,3 peacock bass and a tiger shovelnose catfish or a dovii pair
- a red tail catfish , 2 peacock bass and a jag pair
- arowana,festae,oscars,jags,spotted gar
- red tail catfish, payara, wolf fish (hoplias malabaricus)
I'm asking if the last idea is possible or which monsters of those 3 can be housed in a 280 gallons tank ?
I'm waiting for you suggestions

I'm going to be building a similar tank in the next little while. I'm thinking umbee - either a single male or a pair.

A RTC will get too big for a 280g tank. Keeping a Jag pair, Festae pair and possibly a Dovii pair along with three Peacock Bass and a TSN Catfish... that is way too much. The Dovii pair will need close to that much space themselves. The Bass, depending on what type, will get very big too. If you want a Jag and Festae I would not get a pair... cichlids get very aggressive when paired up... or choose one pair?? If you keep single cichlids you will have more options... Dovii, imo, should not be in a community. Good luck.

you are right i was expecting to be told that becouse i know how big most of those fish get but i want to know wich monster fish or highly predatory species can be kept in 280 gallons and after i found this answer i ll decide if
i m going to make it a single or few monster fish tank or an american cichlid tank so i want a little help

Well, American cichlids are a great place to start, hehe... decide if you want a pair or a few single fish. I love mixing my cichlids with catfish too. Dovii and Jags are more "predatory" then most cichlids, at least more so then a Festae. Parachromis are for the most part all more predatory. The Peacock Bass are huge eaters, but get huge themselves.... figure out what you really want and I'm sure someone will here will let you know if it will work. Again, good luck to you.

Thank you very much for the advice and i think i m going for a pair of dovii a pair of jags and 2-3 peacock bass or one peacock bass and one florida gar...i know even these are pretty much but considering it s lenght even if these cichlids pair up they ll do that in the corners so it s still enough space but cant decide between peacok bass and florida gar...which ones makes better to get fed on big feeders ? Theres a big lake very close so i may get feeders and crayfish daily for.free that s why i am asking of the predatory abilities

When you say pair, do you mean mating pair? I could see your idea possibly working out if all you kept was males and the peacock bass were significantly larger than the dovii and managuensis, but a large dovii mating pair would kill everything in that tank. Peacock bass have a more peaceful temperament, they only eat what will fit in their mouth and can be kept in communities very easily. Dovii has actual teeth and are super aggressive when protecting eggs/fry.

Yes i mean a mating pair..so if i want a community tank the dovii pair went off the list...then i m thinking of a jag pair, 2 peacock bass, a florida gar and a festae pair...will these work ? I just wanna have few big eaters and at least one breeding pair and i cant decide what fish to choose...or a single channa micropeltes (giant snakehed) pair will work ?

The dovii pair will more likely than not want to be by themselves... with your help or not they will remove their tank mates. Jag pair ain't gonna be much better to be honest. The bass will probably be very stressed with any large pair in there...if not killed. Like I said before... if you want a pair of either dovii or even jags that's probably it. You could try single fish.... up to you. 4 or 5 different cichlids n grow them out together. Maybe bass n oscars??
