Ideas for stocking a 280 gallons tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It always surprises me to see such question..why getting such large tank if you dont know what would you like to keep in it? Usually it should always start with "I love arowana" (or smt like that) ..then you get a tank :)

i had a 50 gallons tank with an oscar and jd pair for 3 years and i m not at the start of fish keeping

Sounds like you still have a lot to learn. A 50 gallon with a single oscar is pretty over stocked.

If you're rushing to order fish you should hold off because you're gonna order something that you'll later regret.

It shouldn't surprise you as many of us buy big tanks and overcrowd them and as you see i m just trying to find the best solution for a nice tank ....you didn't helped me too much being like you know everything and this is a stupid thread so plese let other people who can give me some help to do it..i know that was not enough even for the oscars but i was at the begining and every of us made at least one mistake on overcrowding the tank...thats why i am asking becouse i dont want to buy fish that i ll later regret but fish come after one week from the order and that's why i am hurring

Simply a dovi pair or jag pair with other fish will not work, they will kill the other fish. You would be better off looking at a few bass and an arrowana and maybe a catfish or 2.
Leave the channa out of the tank as well, the giant snakehead is not compatible with other fish and will kill for fun.
And don't buy a red tailed cat, unless you plan to make a tropical pond very soon.
You have to decide what you want, a pair or species tank or community. You will of course see tanks that have insane mixes of fish and they do work but those tanks are usually enormous and it is still common that these community's go very very wrong quickly

I understood that either jag or dovii pair won't mix with other fish so i may go on the dovii pair as i don't like the arro that much and i also dont want to have only bass but the only thing it keeps me from making it a dovii tank it's the tank size only for 2 fish...

A RTC will get too big for a 280g tank. Keeping a Jag pair, Festae pair and possibly a Dovii pair along with three Peacock Bass and a TSN Catfish... that is way too much. The Dovii pair will need close to that much space themselves. The Bass, depending on what type, will get very big too. If you want a Jag and Festae I would not get a pair... cichlids get very aggressive when paired up... or choose one pair?? If you keep single cichlids you will have more options... Dovii, imo, should not be in a community. Good luck.

The dovii pair will more likely than not want to be by themselves... with your help or not they will remove their tank mates. Jag pair ain't gonna be much better to be honest. The bass will probably be very stressed with any large pair in there...if not killed. Like I said before... if you want a pair of either dovii or even jags that's probably it. You could try single fish.... up to you. 4 or 5 different cichlids n grow them out together. Maybe bass n oscars??

This is what I told you just after you created this thread... then shortly later you say your getting a Jaguar pair, three Peacock Bass and an Aro.... maybe even two snakeheads... That is the complete opposite of what I suggested. You don't need to take my advice, but if your wondering why no one is responding like you want... well, probably because good advice was offered and you really ignored it.

I tried to tell you that a Dovii or Jag pair will prolly not work in a community setting.... you need to decide if you want a pair or single fish... I asked you that and you still have yet to say which you would prefer. I recommended Bass and Oscars since it seemed you wanted big eaters... If I were you, I'd research some of the fish you like to get an idea of what they require as far as tank mates and tank size. Again, fish grow quick and 280g will fill up before you know it. Best of luck to you.

Thank you very much and yes i make a mistake keeping my crazy ideas instead of taking yours in serious consideration and i got at one conclusion: dovii pair by themselves or 3 peacock bass and a clarias batrachus pair ( i mean those clarias that reach maximum size of around 16 inch ) between these to ideas which one would you go ? Also take in consideration thay they ll have pretty big feeders and crayfish daily but i dont think this is a problem for any of those fish ?

Dovii pair in that tank would be great... the feeders are a whole other can of worms... I'd go with a good pellet as your staple, but thats me. I don't give any of my cichlids feeders... like rosey reds or goldfish as I don't want to introduce any harmful "things" to my tank. If you grow them your self that would be better.

Then i m going on the dovii pair , i like them very much and i always wanted a pair but i didnt have the needed tank but now i do and i ll try to make the best home for them...their main diet will.be pelets for sure but about feeders i wanted to ask what's the usual size for a feeder that can be eaten by the doviis as those i can afford for.free and as many i want are around 3-5 inch and i wanna know.if they are too big to be eaten ?
