Ideas on Cool fish that will thrive with Koi?

When I had a pond in Houston I had Cherry Barbs and Mosquito fish with my Koi. I made sure there were some little rock caves near the shallow depths (say 12") for them to over-winter in. I would loose a few but for the most part they survived and would breed like crazy in the spring.

At 9c yesterday (pond water temp), my Rosy Barbs are still fine and moving. Nonetheless, I have 5 in my house aquarium in case the other 40 die in the pond over the winter.
