IDEAS on potential Tank size for CENTRALS set-up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Neets are notorious nippers and a very aggressive 9/10. I would shy away from them. If you want a tank around the jds and thoricthys than I think that chocolate cichlids and severums are a better choice. Bocourti and pearsi may work fine and are likely better than syns but they all get very big, too big for my taste in a tank this size. But they won't be suffering in a tank that big but once full grown make the tank look small. Just my opinion. Geos also would be a good choice. I love tapajos and they add color without the crazy aggression.

Absolutely no for the neets. They are pound for pound one of the most aggressive centrals out there. You should be good with the EBJD so big. I would personally stick to the central american theme.

I have no idea why there is such a misconseption about the aggresion of meeki. They are tough little fish, imo to be housed with some of the tougher cichlids, you muxt have a pair. But my meeki are some little brutes. The pair has been housed with maculicauda, managuense, istlanum, argentea, micropthalmus, and breeding pairs of salvini, seiboldii, and lyonsi. That is just some of the more aggresive fish I have kept them with. Salvini and meeki are GREAT together. I hope you are not discouraged because of the whole "meeki are not tough enough" misconception. I kept my meeki and salvini breeding pairs in a 90 with a few young cutteri to act as dithers, and it was a very succesful tank. I just thought I would add this in. And in no way am I trying to downplay the level of aggresion from salvini, they are absolutly the more aggresive fish of the two. But my point is meeki are more then capable of handeling themselves. Your mock stock up a few posts looks good to me as well. Good luck, happy fish keeping :)

Theres a guy selling Istlanum Meeki hybrids http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...Bad-Seller-Warning-Hybrid-Istlanum-Firemouths so they must get along sometimes  But Yeah I do realise that will be a very unusual scenario.. My LFS has a large male (the father of my fry) that killed Trimacs, Red Devils and Flowerhorns... hes a monster!

In my experience, Meeki do have a very wide range of personalities (by the way can I change my profile name to Lord Firemouth?) Some can be big whimps while others are very aggressive... not all show and no substance - really nasty. A lot depends on environment and the way they've been raised. The big healthly guys can be brutal. That said I am worried that once I put my young male Salvini with his potential mate the type of fireworks I want might not happen and things could turn ugly.

Yeah I think thats what I'm going to do.

I don't think they are so variable. I think they just have be, mature at least two years old and 4 1/2"+ and paired, not just a pair, but a good strong pair, one they selected from others. I think you will find, young and unpaired meeki to be the reason they are so easily called whimps.

Right guys... I might be upgrading to a 84" long X 24" deep X 30" high tank... This should hold over 200 US gallons and the footprint should allow for a great mixture of centrals :)
