ideas to save plywood tank build??????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would still add some bracing to that tank, I'd hate to see that thinb blow apart on you. As far as the tacky epoxy goes, get a space heater to warm it up and get it cured before trying to add water to the mix.

The epoxy he is using has a crazy amount of strength to it, so if he used cloth there will be no need for any bracing. west system epoxy is amazing.

did you get the pump system for mixing, or just use a mesuring cup.

Don't worry to much about leaching into the water. you only have a 5% error window when mixing. the advice about the space heater is probably the best advice. Hang in there. it will work out fine.

you should think about this you are useing 3/4 osb board good but when you put a screw into the corner seems you are spliting the wood with the 3/16 screws so its not a wise idea not to use 2x4 on the corners to add extra support there unless you glued the dog pixx out of the orners before screwing and added some biscuts in there trust me i know this from experience been a carpenter for 18 years you will have problems in the long run i learned the hard way to but with a homemade 180 with only 3/4 ply what a mistake that was good luck though :WHOA:
:iagree:I do carpentry also and he's right-needs to be reinforced with 2x4's or at least metal brackets although this may now cause leaking if you put more holes......I would totally silicone the heck out of the screws so it wont leak and hopefully epoxy over it would help also.

carpentry has nothing to do with the psi rating of west system epoxy. if it is done correctly it can with stand 11,000 psi. I gave my books to my friend who wants to use the system so don't 100% quote me on that. even if I miss read it and it has 1,100 psi rating there is no where in that tank where the water will be above 3psi. half a pound of pressure per 1 foot of depth.

West system epoxy was designed to fix holes in boat hauls. this pond could be build just out of epoxy without the plywood.

sorry I am in a bad mood at the moment...

:chillpill:was trying to help..........if this is some super epoxy that can hold 10 billion psi so be it.good luck:popcorn:

Fwiw
I have build at least 5 tank's 8'x2'x2' out of 3/4" plywood using 2" and 2 1/2" # 6 wood screws. The only bracing was 2 pieces of 5/4" x 5 1/2" across the front and back set 1/4" below the top.During assembly the screws holes were predrilled and then filled with a good grade of wood glue ,and the edges of plywood were also glued. Three coats of epoxy paint on the interior and have never had leak problems.Maybe just lucky.

Thanks to all who have applied. I think several posts ago someone thought I was the one they were asking to chill. That was not my post. I am thankful for all the advice from those more experienced and i welcome the advice.

I will let you all know what I decide and post some pics when I get to that point.

quick update....
I tried some heat for the curing. It did not seem to effect it in the least. For some reason it will not cure, and I think I may have figured out the reason why. When I was applying the final coat of epoxy I applied a significant amount of hardener in all of the seam areas for extra strength. Well, it may have been too much and since not mixed enough it appears it is just sitting on the top of the surface and not bonding/mixing with anything. The epoxy was mostly dry and the hardener was of too much quantity, I thought it would simply bond butr apparently not in that quantity. So, tomorrow after work I am going to mix up thoroughly the last of the resin and hardener and apply it over all the areas that will not cure. I will make sure the ratios are exact and hope this takes care of it.
has anyone had issues with the hardener holding a shean on the top of the surface and not mixing if applied alone over the resin. Any thoughts.......
I think the hardener is the culprit because of the tint that the liquid/gel material has. Also, when I was trying to heat it there was almost no difference, it was still extremely tacky and uncured.

Will update as to how this goes tomorrow.
