Thanks to everyone for confirming as I had suspected that this is indeed a DEL. The LFS I purchased him from is notorious for mislabeling fish of all species so this is not the first time I got a great deal there.
That LFS is actually a franchise, I am sure if your in Columbus, Cincy, or Dayton you've heard of them. Its Jack's and most of the ones I've been too have mislabeled fish frequently.
Polypterus are seldom brought into LFS. I paid USD $125.00 for each of the two endlis that measured almost 7" when I purchased (one of them died) recently. It broke my heart as it managed to squeeze out of a real small opening by the HOB filter.
I placed an order of six endlis (allegedly wild caught, hopefully more will come) and I expect to pay around USD $ 50.00 each, at the 4" to 6" range. They will be here next Monday (can't wait!).
When it comes to creatures like Polypterus, price is just an arbitrary variable. Someone could double what I paid for mine and I wouldn't sell. In a way my bichir is priceless.

There is a lfs around my area that has "king tiger" bichirs for $150!! they are def. del. Only place around here tht has them.
