Identify that Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is from a completely different shop, I am desperate for a Mayan.

The Trimac has been removed and given to a friend who is now going to quarantine him on his own as he has lots of set ups ( and he killed my breeding pair of beani today and took over there cave so he had to be moved on )
Wow that sucks! Mayan cichlids can be found at pretty much most lfs, beani are extremely hard to find. This definitely looks like a hybrid Trimac. Hybrid’s can get wild and extremely unpredictable. We once had a Texas cichlid that bred with a Red Texas hybrid which at the time I didn’t realize she was a hybrid. Anyway they spawned and had a particular hybrid fry I raised up, called her lulu, she snapped one day and took out a beautiful Red Devil cichlid that I loved. Needless to say she went by by as well to a lfs who was gracious enough to take her. Just say no to hybrids for me anyway. Some people like them and most don’t for good reason.

For most Central American cichlids, no more than a pair of a single species, per 6 ft tank as adults, are feasable.
So it is no surprise that the beanii were killed by the trimac
Where Mayaheros beanii come from on the northern Pacific coast of Mexico they are the sole cichlid in the habitat, and each pair might occupy 1000 gallons, so they are not equip to deal with another species.
I have kept all the above cichlids, but would never keep them together in the same tank '

Trimacs do not share habitat with beanii, so trying keep them together is problematic, they are from a totally different region on southern Mexico.
Same withh Mesoheros festae, from west of the Andes in South America. They are basically loners and seldom come close to sharing habitat with any other cichlids.
Where I live now, in stretches of rivers like the one below, I usually find only 2 species of cichlids, and their microhabitats are in totally different zones of the river, so territories don;t collide.

One species inhabits sandy areas with mederate flow, while the other rocky habitats with higher flows, they seldom come into conflict with each other.
So when we consider cichlids in the confines of the limited space in an aquarium, its no surprize, they kill each other.
I am sometimes amazed when they don't.

On Saturday I visited and collected in the Rio Indio where I only found 1 species of cichlid, among schools of tetras.

we struggle to get anything nice over here in the UK, weather it be for the export issues or the price. No one is keeping the American cichlids anymore they opt for African because they are so cheap and there's hundreds of them on the market.

Its a real shame

Its funny you are looking for a Mayan Cichlid especially when you have Festae
In Florida i have seen YT videos of guys catching 12in Mayans and throwing them back all day long

Where I’m based it’s hard to get any decent American cichlids and I would really like to grow out some Mayans.

You wouldn’t believe the price we pay for Pleco here too, your looking at £60/70 as a minimum

You seem to have pretty good taste in cichlids have you ever looked into black nasty's (Nandopsis Haitiensis) super awesome fish and i believe you can find them where you are and IMO a better pet then a Mayan

I have never come across any black nasty, I've always had my eyes out for a cuban too as i like the black and white. We really do struggle over here. Ive drove almost 3 hours to fish shops.

I have probably 3 main shops near to where i live all about an hour away but hitting them every weekend gets very draining, as as you've probably seen you cant trust what they say because you get sold fish which are totally different to what they are advertised as, this has happened to me twice in the last week.

I have now given up - to an extent lol

i have reached out to a guy that i used to use and asked him to let me know if he ever gets Mayans on any of his stock lists but this fellas is a 4 hour drive away so if he ever did get them for me id be going on a little road trip

There was a lfs that went out of business in London, UK when I was looking for Andinoacara Stalsburgi not long ago. They would not ship here to the states. They had all kinds of awesome fish that is extremely rare to get here. It’s crazy how that works, like troublesum said Florida has them in their lakes and canal’s all over. People just catch them also Oscars, I’ve seen YouTube videos of people deep frying and eating them. I believe their invasive there. Most lfs here have them. I wonder what it would cost to ship over sea’s to you? Mayan cichlids are everywhere here in the USA

If your talking about wholesale tropical in east London, I know the owner very very well and that’s where I got all my awesome American cichlids from as well as my 2 foot RTG Arowana.

He closed the shop in January and I’ve struggled since to find decent stuff

When I google Mayan cichlids it pops up with videos of people filleting and eating Mayans - absolutely crazy that I’m at my wits end trying to get one to keep as a hobby and these peeps are eating them lol
