I just got a little Severums today. There was a tank of "Redline Severums" in on tank, then an unlabeled tank with two Severums in it then on the other side was red shoulder Severums. They said it could possibly be a raspberry severum but a guess is about all they had. Is there any way of ID'ing juvi severums?

Post a picture.
My picture taking skills are not very good and he was a new addition as of yesterday so he is still super skittish. These are the best I could do.

Difficult to say from this pic and age, let him settle in, and try getting a better pic in a few days/ week or so.

So I have had this "mystery severum" for about a month now. He is growing fast and starting to get some red on his bottom fin. Sorry about the crappy pics, but anyone have any clue what he may be?

It appears to have 8 stress bars which would mean either rotkeil or sp. Inirida. Considering the rarity of Inirida, especially at that size, it's more likely a rotkeil. Red shoulder/raspberry/raspberry head are all common/trade names for rotkeil. They will not start to color up and develop the red spotting on the shoulder until 3 - 4", then it will slowly spread in good quality specimens until it has an entire band of red.

You also have to realize that rotkeil will breed with all other species of substrate-spawning severum, so there are a lot of mutts out there in pet stores. You'll never know with 100% certainty what genetics it contains.

Makes sense! That was really just my biggest question was rotkeil or whatever else the different breeds are.

+1. First thing I did was count the bars. Color doesn't tell you much when they're small, rotkeil color takes time to develop and if not for the bars you'd be hard pressed to pick a small rotkeil from a typical green severum, but it's worth the wait for a nice rotkeil to fully develop its color.

I have to say I am quite relieved to hear he is a rotkeil lol. I have always wanted one honestly.
