This fish is only about 3-4" right now, not sure what he is.... Any help?

It's a Vieja of some kind, IMO... Not sure about the species, but certainly not V. synspillum.

Where did you get it? Its certainly a Vieja. the black stripe is a bit odd when mated with how thick that fish is. Fenestratus has that stripe in the same place, but the body is more elongated. My best guess is that its a vieja hybrid with some bifasciatus in it.

I got him at my lfs, there is one guy there that runs the fish room and he is superb. He has one day off a week and it seems everyone with hybrids knows this and drops off their weird little fish on Saturdays. They were listed as viejas, but it was not any that I could find in my book. I liked his personality, so I brought him home

I concur- it reminds me alot of my baby synspilums, yet, NOT QUITE RIGHT for that- very close!

that is either a juvie bifasciatum or a bifasciatum hybrid.
