Idiot Male Festae

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everyone. Not big on the idea of a divider. Will let female hide for now and let the convicts go after the fry. My 180 is cycling. I'll put them there when it's done and take it from there. What a weak pair bond.

Welcome to breeding Festae. You will come to find out that Festae don't usually bond out very nicely. Some do but not usually. Along with the attempts to pair and spawn you will see all different kinds of behaviors that one would not expect. Pairing and spawning Festae are nothin like convicts. If you want to be successful I highly recommend using a divider

Would putting them in a 180 with the spare female present change anything or would it make no difference other than giving the male another female to beat on?

I couldn't agree with this statement more. My pair bonded pretty easily and are on their 4th spawn right now but I've still had to use a divider a few times due to the male beating on the female. I'm lucky I caught it when I did or I cold have lost my(very expensive!!!) female. She has hiding places but the stress alone can kill. My advice is to get over whatever it is you don't like about a divider and use one, or you will likely wake up one day to a dead female. Not trying to be harsh, but this is what you get into when you breed festae and other more aggressive cichlids. It's all about how you manage the aggression.

Got it. I need to decide whether they are for me or not. Parachromis seem much better bonded. Perhaps I should move on from these guys even though they are so stunning. I'm into the scape as much as the fish. Having a divided tank when it's set up as a display is something I won't get over.

I guess its its time to move on.

thanks everyone!

I don't blame you. I do not like to keep cichlids in a divided show tank. I used to do it with Flowerhorn, and didn't like it.

I am surprised to read that Festae, despite being highly aggressive to its mate, can also be skittish when it comes to fry protection. My assumption is that Festae, being in the same genus as Dovii and Manaquensis, would be a fearless fish. Is it an anomaly?

I have no experience with adult Festae but am growing out a Festae juvie for introduction to my peaceful Veija and Green Terror tank. I don't know its sex. Do you think he/she will fit in?

I had a similar issue with Thoricthys Ellioti. WHile the female was guarding eggs he decided to beat on her (I thought there were eggs in the tank but couldn't see them) I had to remove her from the tank or lose her. A few days later he had fry to tend.. a week later he ate all that I hadn't already netted away from him. 3 weeks later I have a dozen survivors, and the female is still healing up. Luckliy for her he beat her on a weekend when I was home, if he had done it during working hours I might have lost her. Ok yeah not exactly Festae +) This is a corner tank I can't divide easily and I had hoped this pair would live happily in it.. not so sure now..
