  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Correct me if anybody thinks I'm wrong but I believe I figured it out with the assistance of others on this thread:

1) White Sucker

2) Rosyface Shiners

3) Johnny Darters

4) Blacknose Dace

Just to double check. These are just Males and Females of Rosyface shiners, not separate species correct?

Again I'm not certain but I'm questioning whether they're all Rosyface shiners and I'm about 95% sure about them being different. I found these things out about the two different looks "types" I have.

Similarities: Same number of dorsal rays (7), same overall body shape and fin appearance.

Differences: Redder two make less movements as well as don't school as tight with others and appear to have smaller scales and have upward points mouths. Duller four have somewhat blunter snouts but not by much as well as have larger scales and forward pointed mouths.

Ok so I figured out that the redder ones are actually Redside Dace but still no clue on the duller four.

I think I figured it out, again :). The reeder ones are redskde dace the the duller ones I believe are silverjaw minnows, correct me it I'm wrong but both match up with the range I got them in.

You are correct that the top ones are Redside dace, one of my favorite minnows!

Cool, any tips? I'm considering getting another two to keep stress down but I don't want to overstock space wise. I am upgrading that tank soon and when I do I'll have 6 of each species (Silverjaw and Redside) but until then I just want a small school. Do you think that'd be doable! I'm willing to up water changes I just worry about aggression and space in a 24"x12"x16".

Update: got another 2 redsides so now I have four and they seem way less stressed than when I had two. Also got another 5 longnose dace which is why I'm posting. The largest and original one was rampantly chasing the others and harassing the perch and darters as well so I removed it and put it in a 10G "time out" (lol :)) tank until I get their final setup ready. Now the next biggest one is harassing the dace, darters, and perch as much as the big one was! I don't know why but it's annoying and dace IME aren't aggressive fish so any ideas how to calm them down? Their final tank is going to be a tank piled with darters I'm making and I don't want them biting any.
