If feeders mainly goldfish have no nutrional value then how do people, I know of at least 5 different people who feed their fish exclusive on feeders and 95% of them being goldfish feeders. How is it their fish grow if everyone says there is no nutrional value. At least two people used to come into petsmart when angela worked there that fed their arowanas and peacock bass 100 goldfish once a week. The arowana were a few feet and I don't recall how big the pbass were. I also used to have two red snakeheads and they were raised from about 3/4 of an inch they ate guppies once they were 3-4 they started eating small comets.. I never even attempted any other food.. I was twelve and just knew they ate that food so that's what they got. I gave them away when they were both about 15 inches and they never ate anything but feeder comets...

They do have nutritional value and some of the fish only eat live food and refuse everything else. It is not where the problem is, the problem is the conditions under which these fish are kept under. Go to a store and you will see HUNDREDS of feeders in some tank that is 30 gallons, now imagine the number of diseases all those fish may carry?

You may get away with doing it but one day you will see your fish just drop dead. It is simply not worth it, and besides there are tons of pellets and flakes you can get that are by far more nutritional.

When you have a clue about what you are doing, feeders is simply not an option unless they are quarantined or home-grown.

i dont feed any of my current fish feeder goldfish ever i use mollies and platties once in a while.. im just saying i see people say all the time in addition to them being in bad conditions and possibly have disease they say they seem to emphasize they have no nutrional value is my point...

If you maintain any species that is intolerant to copper then, feeding that tank feeder goldfish is a death sentence. The farms feeders are raised at use copper to stem the diseases associated with overpopulation. Copper stays in the feeders for a very long time. Long enough that quarantining them for a short amount of time does nothing to reduce copper levels. Herps, saltwater predators, and all inverts will die at very young ages due to liver failure/copper poisoning. This can occur with many freshwater species as well.

Isn't there something in goldfish that prevents the diner from asorbing thiamene or something like that? And of course the poor care and diseases, etc.

Anyway, when I have the need for feeders (need to get a tank proper for my N.A. natives) I'll be breeding my own. At least that way the disease issue is an isn't.

I've switched to bait shop minnows. They're wild caught locally. Fortunately, I have room to keep 4 vats on a quarantine rotation so I can weed out diseases and parasites while I gut-load the minnows for my predators. An added bonus is that the minnows are 1/2 the price of LFS feeders.

You could eat ramin noodles and mcdonalds your whole life and survive and grow...but you wouldn't be as healthy or live as long as if you had a proper diet.
