Discus are not easy to breed. One reason the fry have to be with the parents to feed for the first few days.

Another reason quality. True discus people are picky and see any little problem in a fish wrong fins shape wrong eye size not round enough body poor color weak pattern. The list goes on. Discus people will pay that extra money for high quality fish.

Also differant strains are more money because they are rare or new.

For a 2"-3" discus you could pay $20-$60 depending on strain and quality. The larger the fish the more money 5-6" $100+ .

So it all depends.

I found a breeder in the Sacramento area on craigslist who was charging $5.00 ea for 2" turquoise discus.
I bought 8. They are now 5"+ and are gorgeous! I don't know if he ships.

it takes a lot of work to breed any fish for profit, but it all comes down to supply and demand. if people refused to pay high prices for these fish then the breeders would have to sell them cheaper.

keep you eyes open for some on craigslist and I think that you will find some that you can afford. Even if you pay a low price they can be quality fish just at a small size.

I sell home grown discus for less than $20 each when they are between 2"-2.5". That's when they are about 3 months old. Beyond that, the cost to raise them isn't cheap so that's why they are so expensive as adult. You can dream about offering discus cheap but the reality is that you will have to cut corners and won't be able to offer high quality fish to hobbyist. I use the term "hobbyist" because discus are for the average person who just want to have a fish tank with pretty fish.

You can buy a small discus for cheap but when you factor the cost/risk in being able to get it a beautiful 6"-7" discus that cost a few hundred dollars, it's cheaper to buy them big.

I rather see expensive high quality discus out there then cheap discus that should be culled. When you buy discus, you get what you paid for (I am not talking about LFS discus here).
