these are my water stats
ph 7
nitrate 80
nitrite 0.5

If these water stats were yours what actions would you take, if any, to change the stats if the tank was housing O's, Salivini's, and Choloclate cic?

I would do a water change to bring down the nitrates. I would also ask what size tank you have and how big the fish are. What are your ammonia levels, and what filtration is there? I would also add some salt, like 1 teaspon per 5 gallons to help alleviate nitrite burning.

Small daily water changes, But more info is needed, on the tank, filters, and fish in it,
your tanks:
1. overloaded
2. not fully cycled

Not sure what the amonia levels are. The tank is 300 L,
stock list:
4 pictus cats 4inches
2 choc cic 1 x 3inch, 1 x 4inch
2 salvini's 3 inches
1 albino oscar 3 inches

there are two external fluval 405's, (using tank water to clean).

Thanks for the fast reply:thumbsup:

1. don't think she's overloaded, you must have replied the same time as me, but I've put a stock list up
2. as for the cycle, the tank has been up and running for about a year, all previous fish that have been in there have all been fine, no problems, (this is confusing me)

I did a 50% water change a couple of days ago, tested the water today and these are the results I got. I'm in the middle of doing another 50% now.

Shane ;)

It's not over stocked,
How long has the tank been running with the current stock?
Could there any trapped food rotting away in there, at the back behind some decor?

we are posting at the same time

How long have you had them?

pictus a good 5/6 months, they don't look like they've got anything wrong with them.
salvini's 2/3 months, they don't look unhealthy either
choc's 3/4 months, the bigger male looks healthy but the littler female has her fins clamped up and the albino oscar about a month tops, he's laying on the bottom, not moving or eating and breathing really fast, also he has alot of air bubbles stuck to him as well. Fish I've lost: another oscar with the same syptoms as the one above, but he died and 2 x texas with the same symptoms which have also both died. The texas were purchased at the same time as the oscars from the same tank.
Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated

Adding salt will help with the stress, but your plec won't like it.
i would say 20% water changes every day and have a look around for somthing rotting away in there, do a good gravel vac,
When you move the gravel about do you get bubbles rising up?

tank with the current stock, (we must have replied at the same time again as I've just put a reply with the current stock)
all the fish that are in there now, apart from the pictus are a new lot of fish. before any of these cic's were put in there i had a big red devil, a pictus and a marbled pim in the tank. the red devil killed the pim so i removed him and filled the tank with less aggresive cic's, (the stock I have now.)

As for the rotting food, the cichlids were all eating whatever I put in the tank so there is no left over food from what I feed them. I feed the catfish catfish pellets, (the cichlids won't eat these.) I put in a pinch of catfish pellets, most of the time they get eaten but 25% of the time they may leave the odd five, six or seven pellets on the bottom, the cichlid's do pick them up and chew them but they just spit it straight back out again. Could that be the problem, the odd pellets left hanging around in the tank?
Thanks
Shane
