If you adopt a fish that is stunted..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Had a stunted fantail goldfish at 3"....three years later it was 5". It grew really slowly.

I Just bought a 56g column that I also inherited a 12" common pleco that had a jacked up tail, my LFS had no problem with it and took him for free. This is the first real 'rescue' Ive really ever dealt with. It was sad because the seller told me that this was their third pleco they had grown out in this tank. They would buy a small common, grow it out and take it to the store and repeat the cycle. No one had the sense to talk them into a small species like a bristlenose.

Not meaning to derail the thread but why do i see so many threads promoting NLS? Does NLS sponsor mfk?

Just depends on age and how bad, if its a 5 year old stunted fish chances are it won't matter but if its still young a proper diet, space and clean water will help!

Exactly. Some fish will be more responsive than others, most fish that are stunted at an early age/size will never reach their full potential. One of our LFS has some V. regani that have probably been at the store for close to 2 yrs, the largest male is at best 3.5". Those fish will never come close to reaching their full potential no matter what kind of care is provided. Damn shame as they're beautiful fish that at one time did have some great potential, and if someone buys them now they're going to wonder why they can't seem to get them to grow.

I've heard both it must depend on the fish. A buddy of mine 'rescued' an oscar from a 10 gallon and it had supposedly been in there 2 or 3 years. Popped it into a 120 and the thing exploded. That being said I have a pair of ID sharks at the store that were kept in a 10 for a year and hadn't grown an inch since they were bought, I doubt those will grow out to be even close to their potential size. Sad.
