um honestly i have one 180 gallon with a Fluval FX5 with the fluval filter pads, bio balls, Bio max, and 3 - 10 oz bags of chemi-pure for media and they seem to work well. you can buy a 12 pack of the 10 oz chemi pure for $65 at almost any mail order catalog. i remove one bag per month so each bag is in my filter for 3 months. For lighting i have the Coralife Lunar-Aqualight series. Big Als sells the 72" lights for about $450. i have 2 - 300 watt Fluval E series heaters (appx $55 a piece), they have digital settings not the knob that you have no clue where it is set. look into those they will warn you when water is 2 degrees above or below your set temperature with a flashing display. i have 2 power heads for aeration, but that's your preference.

Get a bigger tank, with that budget, 180 can house a lot of fish, but a bigger footprint will house even better and more variety. But it all depends on what you like.

Plant that 180G, some CLown Loaches and some Tetras (50-100) on top, a site to see, and will calm you down... my 2 pennies.

make one killer reef :D

get a silver arowana and a fllowerhorn and some cool small cichlids that can live on the bottom of your tank maby even a fire eel!

I may be just a little odd and I know this goes against what this site is about, but... I would go with a full CO2 set-up, LED lights and 12 discus and about 100 cardinal tetra's. I know it's boring, but it could be nice.

in a few weeks ill be working on my second 180 gallon. Its coming with 7 Red Bellies, a 16" red tail catfish, and a 10" alligator gar. Not sure on its filtration and heat setup, but ill keep ya posted. Its a full setup from a friend and ill probably be adding my 5 Red Belly Piranha from my 140 gallon tank. Gonna be an interesting addition since i been trying to get rid of the RBP. The best way... double my stock ... lol

I use (2) xp3's with my 150, does a really good job. I do 50% water changes weekly. I have (2) severums, (2) parrots, (2) tinfoil barbs, pleco, clown knive and a striped raphael.
