Brown recluse bites are NOT extremely necrotic. In fact, they are RARELY necrotic and most victims heal WITHOUT medical attention and never knew their bite was anything more than a mosquito bite.

Most MAJOR problems involving brown-recluse or other spider bites are INFECTION due to the victim scratching the ITCHY (read NOT painful and necrotic) wound. Please do not add to the internet hysteria.

Short Facts

# No population of the spider in California & Florida has ever been reported.

# Up to 50% of all diagnosis of brown recluse spider bites are in geographic regions of the US where there aren't any brown recluse spiders

# Bites from other animals and are often misidentified as brown recluse bites.

# Most scientific literature about the brown recluse is about its venom.

Ok..does everyone feel a little safer now?

80% of "recluse bites" are actually misdiagnosis!

I agree ^!

Sadly, the country's methamphetamine epidemic has played a big part in fueling the Brown Recluse urban legends. Meth addicts often develop necrotizing sores. These sores are the result of a depressed immune system, lack of hygiene, and a tendency to pick at themselves.

Brown recluse spiders are only slightly more dangerous than the Chupacabra, another creature immortalized on this forum... :)

Ive heard of this spider and was aware of what it looked like. But I alwyas thought it was in the southeast only. But to tell you the truth, I think Ive actually seen these around my house and one almost bit me. We do have black widows though, and they have a nasty bite too. Ive been aware of black widows since I was a kid and was scared straight so I never messed with the spider.

that is definately a brown recluse bite! Ouch....

That is unbelievable... none of us will look at spiders again in the same way... hope your okay now.. what does it look like now? wow thats awful.

That's why we shouldn't believe it! :)

Spiders are extremely beneficial creatures that almost never harm humans. "Spider Bite" or even "Brown Recluse Bite" has become medical shorthand for "Necrotized Wound of Unknown Origin" for many doctors. The truth of the matter is that over 95% of "Spider Bites" are misdiagnosis.

I don't mean to belittle the suffering people have endured in any way, but spiders simply do not deserve to be maligned because of problems most often caused by flesh-eating (necrotizing) bacteria.
