i think it was a manta ray

It was a spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari) At least thats what It looked like to me.

That ray reminds me of my college prof. who would actually change the words of songs to add fish and fish facts in them. You know that song "Roxanne" with the words "Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light", he changed that to "Rock Bass, you don't have to show us your red eye". I always told him he should make a CD, that thing would fly off the shelves.
