I see the D60 and D80 are both the same megapixels... Whats the benefit of the D80?

The biggest benefit would be that the D80 has an in body lens motor. Like the D40, the D60 doesn't. So you would limited to buying certain expensive lens if you wanted to autofocus.

I also don't see commander mode listed for the D60. Commander mode makes firing flashes remotely easy. Not having it and wanting to fire flashes remotely means having to buy accessories. The D80 has it.

So D40 or D80 would be the right move? Im just a fan of Nikon in general and only also considering the canon which has higher megapixels for the "lower-end" models

It really depends on how serious you are with photography. If you're a little bit more serious with it and your budget allows, you should get the D80 or higher up models. If you're a casual shooter who just likes something better than a P&S then the D40 or D60 would do just fine. Also rumors have it that the D80 is going to be replaced soon with a D90 or whatever they'll end up calling it. I don't know if you want to wait for it but it'll probably won't be announced officially till around August.

Also here's a link to a discussion on D60 vs D80 on nikoncafe.

we have a 70d,there are not for sale anymore but he owns.

Megapixels aren't the be all, end all, in the DSLR world. One thing you should look into is the availability and price of additional lenses. Kit lenses, for the most part, suck. Nikon's are notorious for having rediculously expensive lenses in comparison to Canon. Just sayin...

If you're still stuck up on Nikon...get a D40 and be done with it. Its plenty of camera for 80% of the people that use them.

Im still contemplating the canon but I always had a thing for nikon.. It would be like me buying a japanese car LOL I just dont think I could do it no matter how much I like it

Go with the D80. If you think you'll be happy with one lens you're probably wrong. Most kit lenses aren't good for zoom or close up, but they're decent for everything in between. You can also find TONS of used and third part lenses (not so much with the 40 and 60).
I have a D50 and I'm thrilled with it. Luckily I got mine before they changed the entry level lens format so I can use the lenses that have been around forever.

The D40s and 60s are good cameras, but I'm guessing you can make up the extra money spent (on an 80) when you go to get a new lens. Here is where I get my used lenses just for reference (check Nikon AF in the used section...Their autofocus won't work on the 40s or 60s) www.jackscamera.com

With that said, good glass is much more important than a higher MP (unless you're doing huge prints).

Other than a few primes, I don't really see what the big deal is about older lenses on the D40/60 series. Sure you could potentially save money but then again you're probably trading better optics and faster auto-focus by not buying the newer AF-S lenses. All Nikon lenses will eventually be updated to have AF-S as it's the current standard. Also third party lens maker like Sigma and Tamron have a wide range of lenses that will work with those cameras as well.

like someone else stated megapixels are the end all in DSLR cameras. either nikon or canon are great brands-what you really invest in are the lenses. i would get the D40, and spend the extra moolah on some good lenses and that overhead flash for good aquatic pics-its what i plan on doing.
