Other than a few primes, I don't really see what the big deal is about older lenses on the D40/60 series. Sure you could potentially save money but then again you're probably trading better optics and faster auto-focus by not buying the newer AF-S lenses. All Nikon lenses will eventually be updated to have AF-S as it's the current standard. Also third party lens maker like Sigma and Tamron have a wide range of lenses that will work with those cameras as well.
When the older lenses are obsolete and you lose the opportunity to save money, the 40s and 60s will be obsolete. I guess I must be a cheap ass.

Something else I should mention, is that most of my pics are shot in manual focus. It's a pain but it gives me more control than a lens that wants to focus on something other than the eye of the fish.

They're not obsolete since you can use them on the 40s and 60s it's just that you'll have to manual focus. Or is manual focusing obsolete? Do you know canon never had an in body motor since the 1980's? All of their current lenses since then are their version of AF-S so Nikon is actually quite behind in that respect. Also if you want cheap glass, there are 3rd party lenses that will work with the D40/60 as well as Nikon's own consumer zoom grade lenses.

give me your opinion on these packages? They all have an extra lens.. between the two lenses is either any good. Im such a noob

obviously the D40 package is the cheapest but is it and/or any of the 2 lenses any good?

I like all the cameras and flashes, but none of the lenses for aquairum photography, unlesss you plan on standing 10 feet away from the tanks. Those lens are for the most part meant for outdoors with lots of light, shooting at the zoo or something like that.

If aquatic photography is going to be your primary focus, I'd look for similar deals but with a lens like a 18-70mm or even a prime lens like a 50 or 60mm.

Just get a XTi (or XSi even) kit and buy the Canon 50/1.8 lense (should run you about $75 used), battery grip (you'll want one if you have hands bigger than a 12 year old), external flash, memory cards, etc. You'll have two very versatile lenses and all the extras you would need without being forced into buying a kit (which aren't good deals IMO).

My eyesight sucks ( I need new glasses) so I have to rely on auto focus. The only manual focus camera that I liked was the older film SLRs where the visual focusing square in the viewfinder moved according to lens position.
I don't think nikon is "behind". They've stuck with what works. I think the only reason for the recent change is to make the body smaller. Perhaps that's what I like less. I can't stand little cameras that I have to hold with my fingertips.

??????? Help

Lemme show you a few pics I took with a D70s. And unless you're planning on selling pics to magazines or printing posters, pixels are really not all that important. Note the last 3 pics were taken with the "cheap" 70-300 mm G lens that sells for less than 200 bucks now.
