Iguana??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My iguana never showed any aggression or bit me and I handled her almost every day.

That being said, I do think they are quite high maintenance, I would love to have another one, but will not until I have a 10' x 10' room to keep her in as I did my last one, if ever...

There is an employee at a petco near me that breeds iguanas. I think he said they are red iguanas. I would imagine that the breeding environment is enourmous like room sized

I couldnt even begin to count how many times the Iguana's ive had over the years have whipped me with tails bit me or got a little attitude. They can be a dominate acting creature if in the right position. One of my big males was going through his "puberty" change and had one of the nastiest attitudes for a while. One of the few that have bit me hard and latched onto my forearm and would not release for about 5 to 10 minutes. I remember bleeding all over the place and him not letting go. Have a nice scar from that. lol

I handled mine daily as well. Most the times when I was home they were left to roam around and hang out ontop of the fish tank. back of the couch or where ever comfy. My female would always want to go to the top of the curtain rod and lay up high. She was one of the few that never gave me any attitude. I think its a Male hormonal thing more so then anything.

It probably does have to do with sex... I shouldn't have said 'never showed any aggression' because I received plenty of tail whips and general attitude, just never any actual biting.

Mine used to hang out like that the first couple years, but when I bought a house she had her own room where I could keep the temp and humidity up, as well as setting up large tree branches for climbing and basking.

Mine also had their own room/enclosure as well. Only let them roam around when I was home hanging out.

I have to say my peace. Green iguanas are not hard to keep. I have had several. I have had them breed several times. You go to the grocery store every week for yourself? You get the ig's food at the same time...easy. Mine had an enclosure that was 6' x 3' x 6'. That's not huge for an adult. BUT... he really only slept there and was fed there. The rest of the time he was allowed to roam the house. He would just follow the sun around to each window. We let him on the patio(under constant supervision) to get natural sun every weekend at the least. His claws were trimmed whenever needed. i did this in the morning before his heat light came on. Had very little trouble. I have NEVER been bitten. My last one was 18" when I got him. When I sold him to a pet store 5 years later he was 52". Before that I raised 3 from 8"hatchlings to full 6' adults. 2 female 1 male. they bred 3 times before I sold them. They were housed in a 6 x 5 x 4 all glass enclosure that I built myself. Again they had the house most days. People seem to be over complicating things. They do require planning but aren't THAT hard to keep successfully.
