I thought it might have been an amonia spike. I almost had the same problem moving water and sand from one tank to another. What was weird is that my amonia was 0 but my nitrite was pretty high. I had to keep the fish in buckets and add a amonia, nitrite and nitrate reducer. That didn't help until a few days. I was worried about my fish making it. Sand is great when it comes to getting waste off the surface, but it also traps more then I thought it would.
 
You lost some great looking fish. Hopefully you are planning on bouncing back.

They were all very beautiful, top notch of their respective species, but so is your remaining stock. It's a shame it happened, but we live and learn.

I still have some nice stock so I'll def bounce back. 100% Correct in that we live and learn. Thank you both.

My water levels were not too bad, however I did not test the water until about a week after the change. I agree the sand def does trap stuff tho.
