even if the lake freeze over, the bottom of the lake will always remain an average of 4 celsius degree..

They dont need to, if not necessary.. oxygen contains in the water..

Just like betta.. they dont have to come to the top to breath, if there's enough oxygen.

SH have another option or than sufficate at the water .. thats to breath out of the water
