The reef flats behind Mc Cormick Place are about 450 yds straight out of the old Expo Center. They are in 35-50 feet of water and are crystal clear. There are weed beds out there between the reef walls. These are a series of breakers that slow the waves down and harbour a ton of fish if you have a boat and GPS so you can mark locations.
There is great shore fishing on the Salt Creek Bike trail! You can pick it up just south of Busse Woods spillway and follow it all the way down to the end at the Des Plaines River in Lyons IL at Ogden ave & First(177) aves. This creek gets a natural stock from the spillway of all fish stocked in Busse Lake(Higgins rd) and the IDNR stocks the Salt Creek and the Des Plaines River.
Here is the trail for the Salt creek... http://www.fpdcc.com/downloads/sc_bikemap.pdf
If you make down to the Des Plaines River, make sure you fish the spillway from shore at Ogden and Joilet Aves. This is a historic snag fest, but big fish can be had here!
