I'm a newbie!!!! Questions about my RTC

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't really give him feeds if stress is present ( why make him chase the food if he doesn't have to). As for gill cure, their is no cure for that, But to prevent it from getting worse, Keep water clean, keep water clean, and keep water clean. Don't add any chemicals to the tank if you don't really have to. By adding aquarium salt to the tank will help with slim coat and prevent parasites (in the gills and on the body), Keep temp high (83 to 86) , but if you are keeping water clean and water parameters good, then salt would be irrelevant.

ok thanks man!!will do!

uhm actually i was going to make it up as i go but now that you mentioned it, i may be building a pond for the fish's adult years..for now maybe upgrade to a 150 gal in a couple of mos..btw what substrate is best suited for RTC??thanks!!

Not trying to flame but a 150 should be set up and ready to go in a month maybe two. Then a pond 1-2 thousand gallons should be set up by 6 months.

I would say silica sand would be the cheapest and would work great.

tnx man!!i will try my best to provide my RTC will quality care!!!

oh and also what kind of filter will be best at providing the proper oxygen amount and will simulate the current of this fish's natural habitat in the deep rivers of the amazon??

further more guys, what should i feed to the guppy feeder fish so they will be more nutritious and live longer?and also isn't it dangerous for my young RTC to have gill curl while he is still small?and how did he have it in the first place??he is about 3'' and is in a 15gal tank so space is not an issue...yet.., the water has been treated will anti-chlorine formula and salt..i think the temp and ph is what is required because of our water supplier but i still haven't been able to validate this because i lack a water testing kit, and the tank is still clean because he hasn't eaten yet and so doesn't poop much..hmmmm...man i have alot of questions but i know that there are alot of experts here so i've come to the right place for help..pls bear with me guys..Thanks Alot!!

Ok ive read all this and just like to say nope nope nope and erm nope!!!!! you wana go get yourself a new tank right now or even a huge tub to house him in, a 15g is way too small even for a 3" rtc. once this little guystarts to eat there will be no stopping him and the growth. all of my rtc's (5 of them btw) grew from 2"+ to 10" in 3 months and 2 of mine did not eat for the 1st month, so you get the idea on how fast these guys can grow if in the right conditions. im not critisizing but seriously consider a lager tank for him with no feeders, just him alone, on another note no substrate is fine for rtc's, it doesnt look great to us but they apretiate it more this in turn may also stop or even cure the gill curl as there is no where for the bad bacteria to colonise in the substrate!!

Please consider that larger tank and take them feeders out, as some1 suggested before bloodworm would be ok for him atm or try some shredded prawns, just the frozen kind you get from supermarkets (defrost 1st ofcourse). Hope all this helps and if you have any more questions then dont hesitate to ask ;) we are all here to help :D

Welcome to MFK and good luck with your new baby monster :D

get test kit as soon as you can

for now-

sand substrate (always with cats)
no lights untill he feeds
remove any uneaten food after 30 mins-they wont touch it after its sat in the tank
dont try to feed every day
try small pieces of prawn or mussel (one piece at a time)
try adding another hiding place-maybe a piece of wood
filtration-always bigger is better-as long as the fish doesnt get blown around the tank
dont expect him to feed if you have your nose pressed up against the glass-stand back and keep still
do a 20 to 25 percent water change every other day untill you get test kit
post again when fish is 30in plus
;):grinno::)
