got it, it all makes sense now! i always thought you had to tune the overflow and return to match with a ball valve or something.

So I assume water level is critical here?
When refilling after a water change would one typically mark the glass somehow to show the maximum the tank can be refilled in relation to the overflow hole location? If you added to much water to the tank the sump would overflow if the pump failed right?

i'm guessing you just need a sump big enough to hold all the water from the tank at it's lowest point.
