I'm about to ponder taking this on..just want to double check

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how much are those? Where are you purchasing this from?

I went and looked at this eel and set up last night.
Literally NO filtration except for the sand bed and live rock..
They said they haven't done any water changes ect in months..like they can't remember.

So I'm picking him up on Sunday.

Any suggestions on the type of stuff I should do prior to bringing home a tank like this..I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm going to look into that pre-made sump.
The tank isn't pre-drilled so I heard that's more of a pain in the butt to deal with in terms of sump.

Also..the LFS has live rock on sale for 9.99 lbs, is it to worth it to pick up some and some base rock ?

Thanks again,
Kat

Can someonee point me in adirection I should go with filtration for this tank.
The more research I do the more fustrated and sad I become..I'm so unsure..

I'll be adding more fish to this tank eventually..not anytime soon but, I'd like the filtration to be set up.

All this guy comes with is a heater and lights.
So the filtration can be anything as of now.

Thanks!

Wet/dry or sump/refugium. I have a Proclear wet/dry on my tank. Its actually a surprisingly simple system with the overflow box, it pretty much works the same as drilled. The advantage of a sump is the ability to have a skimmer in the sump and you can make a refugium in one of the compartments...

DO NOT BUY LIVEROCK AT THE LFS FOR $10/LB

check on craigslist, it pops up more often than you would think from anywhere at $1-3/lb, as far as keeping the eel healthy, you would legitimately have to TRY to kill that thing, they are very very very very hardy. sump/canister isnt 100% necessary but it is definitely helpful, if you're looking for a short term fix once you get everything up and running just do like a 25% WC and get a decent skimmer

I'm in Canada..Craigslit is near non existant lol....

I was thinking of a wet/dry..I'm just soo nervous about plumbing ect..I feel like a total newbiee lol...
Is there a place/directions on how to build your own..purchase one? Also a skimmer....I'm looking at about 500 or more for both items right?
I have an empty 30 gallon tank sitting around I could use.
I haven't really seen anyone in SW run canister filters on their tanks, as the biological asset isn't there or is it?

Yeah,I mean, I was surpised the eel lived this long with it's current situation..so that makes me feel a little more confident that I'll be able to give it a good life.

When I pick the set up on Sunday, I'll only be taking a rubbermaid container of the water with the eel, another container with water to transport the live rock and that's it.

I'm going to be setting aside fresh water in a big container tonight to let it sit . Should I put prime in this? The water they are filling it up wit his from a well...I'm in the city.

Thanks again,
Kat

You might not have Craigslist but I do believe Yahoo classifieds is big there. You can also get Live Rock online for 3-4/lb....

Yeah I'm going to buy online.
I'm really glad you guys pointed that out. I hope they will ship that :)..We use kijiji lots..I check it literally hourly almost haha.:)

+1 on this guy. I made the mistake of buying my first 30lbs of live rock from my LFS for $4 a pound. Not pretty.

But honestly as soon as you get it all settled in your home, do the water change. Somewhere around 20% and 25% sounds about right. Just try to get that water quality better and a WC will help with that.

Filtration is still your choice, though. Plumbing isn't as difficult as it seems, and you can probably find a good walk through on the internet, maybe even on here (I haven't checked for one). If you can afford it, buying an already built sump or wet/dry makes your job that much easier. Then you'll just need a return pump and an overflow box and you're pretty much set.

Yeah from what I've been researching a pre-made sump will cost around 200 plus ..the pump and skimmer ect...
Does anybody ahve a good website they'd recommend that builds these?
I'm not sure I'm ready to tackle building one myself yet lol.
I've been researching step throughs, but I still somehow can't grasp the entire concept on how to do it.*sighs*.
I'll keep researching. I have until Sunday , and he's been fine somehow for 6 or more months without them recalling a water change ect..just occasioanlly topping up the water..blows my mindl ol..I'm getting a test kit tonight.

Is there a particular test kit that is good to test everything for SW? that you'd recommend?

Get a clean aquarium, and a return pump. Throw some hoses into a filter sock on one end, various filtration things you want in the middle, and your return pump on the opposite end. Simplest sump possible. Basically how I run mine.

I would go with an API test kit. Wont break the bank, reasonably accurate for what you are trying to do.
