I'm allergic to bloodworms!!!!! OH NO!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
WEll then I'm glad to hear that its quite common, I'm not losing my mind over here. I have no one that can do water changes for me. Maybe charcoal in the filter could rid the water of this irritant? Turns out that I do use the Hikari brand frozen worms. My whole body breaks out in hives, arms legs chest back. I do have allergies to avocado and bananna so i know what the symptoms feel like. Extremely uncomfortable but i know that a more serious reaction could take place. Just wearing gloves does not seem like a sufficient barrier, what if i spill onto my legs or shirt? I did suspect the tank de chlor but I had a reaction simply from opening a package and handling the worms. Keep these guys away from your kids!!!!!!

Yep, just touching the packaging can do it. Some people have such a strong allergic reaction that just opening a freezer where they're stored can cause a reaction.

For what it's worth, my symptoms are not nearly as strong when I do water changes. You can probably wait a few days and change the water without any issues. I only have a reaction if they're still in the water. Sometimes if I touch the rim of the tank where worms have been, my arm will get itchy. Otherwise I haven't had a problem during w/c.

Sorry fishies, your water change will be a few days late this time........ maybe a bit of surf and turf with beefheart and brineshrimp instead of worms!!!!

is there anything that i can clean the tank with that will not kill the fish? something to clean the glass and rim and hood would be great.......

I'm definitely a noobie on here but have kept fish for as long as i can remember off and on. I remember the in tank clear plastic foam filters that worked almost like sponge filters!!! they were made to fit in the corner of the tank!!! hahaha old school!!!! anyways, Mods.... i think this could be a sticky for those that are having symptoms or for those new to the hobby. allergies can be dangerous. I know we're not a medical/doctor based organization, but just to alert people this might make a good sticky. It seems like anyone could easily overlook the worms as the culprit!
